In chemistry, test tubes are used to mix, heat, and hold chemicals in experiments. In biology, test tubes are used to culture, or grow, samples of various organic materials such as bacteria, mold, and yeast. While not common, there are other types of test tubes used for very specific tasks. There is a graduated test tube used for measuring small amounts of liquids while in action.
